Claude extra usage: how usage credits work and what they cost

Updated October 13, 2026

Usage credits let you keep using Claude and Claude Code after you hit your plan's limit. They are prepaid and billed at standard API rates, on top of your plan, and you can set a monthly spend limit. If you buy them most months, moving up a plan is usually cheaper.

How usage credits work

  • You add funds in advance. When you reach a plan limit, requests switch to pay-as-you-go and keep working.
  • They are charged at standard API rates and show as a separate charge on your bill.
  • You can set a monthly spend limit, or turn on auto-reload to top up when your balance runs low.
  • The monthly API credits included with Max and Team do not pay for usage credits.

How to turn them on

In Claude Code, run /usage-credits. On Pro or Max it opens Settings, then Usage, on claude.ai, where you can turn credits on, add funds and set your limit. On Team and Enterprise, members without billing access send a request to their admins instead.

Credits or a bigger plan?

Compare what you spend on credits each month with the cost of the next plan up:

When upgrading beats buying usage credits
You are onNext planExtra cost per monthUpgrade if you spend more than this on credits
ProMax 5x$80$80 a month
Max 5xMax 20x$100$100 a month

Upgrading also raises your limit for every future month, while credits only pay for what you use. Credits suit the occasional heavy week. Regular overflow is a sign you need the bigger plan.

A hidden cost: shorter cache

On a subscription, Claude Code keeps your context cached for an hour. Once you are drawing on usage credits, the cache lasts five minutes by default. After a short break, Claude has to re-process your whole context, so the same work can cost more on credits than you expect.

Check what your usage costs before deciding.
