Claude Pro vs Max: which plan do you need?
Updated October 13, 2026
Pro costs $20 a month and suits light Claude Code use. Max costs $100 for five times Pro's usage or $200 for twenty times. If you code with Claude Code most days, Pro's limits usually run out and Max is the better fit.
- Pro
- $20/mo
- Max 5x, 5x Pro's usage
- $100/mo
- Max 20x, 20x Pro's usage
- $200/mo
Pro and Max side by side
| Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price, monthly | $20 | $100 | $200 |
| Price, billed yearly | $17 a month | Monthly only | Monthly only |
| Usage per 5-hour session | The baseline | 5x Pro | 20x Pro |

| Claude Code included | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| API credits included | None | $100 a month | $200 a month |
The plans share one pool of usage across Claude chat, Claude Code and the editor extensions. What changes is how much you get before a limit stops you.
Which one fits how you work
The answer depends on how often and how hard you use Claude Code, not on features. These are calculator results for four common patterns:
| How you use Claude Code | Worth at API rates | Best fit | Plan filled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend tinkerer2 days a week, quick help, Sonnet | $22 | Pro ($20) | 17% |
| Side projects3 days a week, building features, Opus | $195 | Max 5x ($100) | 31% |
| Daily developer5 days a week, building features, Opus | $325 | Max 5x ($100) | 52% |
| All-day agents6 days a week, all day, Opus | $1,559 | Max 20x ($200) | 62% |
A plan is a good fit when your usage fills about 70% of it or less, which leaves room for busy days. Try your own numbers.
Signs you have outgrown Pro
- You hit the 5-hour limit in the middle of a task more than once a week.
- You run Claude Code for hours at a time, or more than one session at once.
- You use Opus or Fable for most of your work. Bigger models use up a plan faster.
If none of these sound like you, stay on Pro. Paying $17 a month on the yearly plan is the cheapest way to use Claude Code regularly.
Max 5x or Max 20x?
Max 5x suits a developer who uses Claude Code for a few focused hours on most days. Max 20x is for all-day use, long agent runs, or several sessions in parallel. Max users who outgrow 5x can move up to 20x. More on Claude Max.
Common questions
- Is Claude Max worth it over Pro?
- If your usage would cost more than $100 a month at API rates and you hit Pro's limits often, yes. A developer who builds features with Opus five days a week uses around $325 of API-rate usage a month, which Max 5x covers for $100.
- Can I pay for Max yearly?
- No. Max is billed monthly. Pro has a yearly option at $17 a month.
- Do Pro and Max include Claude Code?
- Yes. Both include Claude Code. The Free plan does not.
- What happens when I hit a limit?
- You can wait for the limit to reset, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits. Usage credits are prepaid and billed at API rates.
