Claude usage limits explained

Updated October 13, 2026

Every Claude plan limits how much you can use in a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add a weekly limit on top. Claude chat and Claude Code share the same limits. There is no fixed message or token count: longer conversations, bigger models and heavier features use up a limit faster.

On Team and Enterprise, each person has their own allowance from their seat. Anthropic says it may also limit usage in other ways, such as monthly caps or limits on certain models and features.

How the two limits work

The 5-hour limit covers a rolling five-hour window. When you reach it, you wait until the window moves on. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time set for your account. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable, which can use up to half of the weekly limit.

Everything counts toward the same pool: Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, Claude Code, and the editor extensions.

When you hit a limit

  • Wait for the reset. Claude Code shows when the window resets.
  • Switch model if the message names one, such as “You've hit your Opus limit”. Moving to a model outside that family keeps you working. A session or weekly limit applies to all models, so switching does not help there.
  • Move up a plan, from Pro to Max, or from Max 5x to Max 20x.
  • Turn on usage credits to keep going at API rates. How usage credits work.

Why you hit limits sooner than expected

Claude Code sends your whole conversation with every request, so a session that has been open for hours uses far more than its last message suggests. A first message after a long break can also re-process the full context. Clearing between unrelated tasks with /clear and choosing a smaller model for simple work both stretch a limit further.
