Claude Max: price, limits and is it worth it?

Claude Max costs $100 a month for Max 5x or $200 for Max 20x. Both are measured against Pro ($20 a month): Max 5x gives five times Pro's usage per five-hour session, Max 20x gives twenty times. Both include Claude Code and monthly API credits.

Per unit of usage, Max 5x costs the same as Pro and Max 20x costs half as much. Anthropic publishes the 5x and 20x ratios but not the limits in tokens, so the “usage covered” row is our estimate, explained below.
How the limits work
Each plan gives you a set amount of use inside a rolling five-hour window. Max also has a weekly cap, with a separate weekly limit for Fable. Claude chat, Claude Code and the editor extensions all draw from the same limits.
When you reach a limit, you can wait for the reset, move from Max 5x to Max 20x, or turn on usage credits. Usage credits are prepaid and billed at API rates. The API credits included with Max do not pay for usage credits.
Is Claude Max worth it?
It is if you use Claude Code most days. We measured one heavy user on Max 20x: over 30 days, their Claude Code use would have cost $1,497 at API rates, mostly on Opus, and they almost never hit a limit. They paid $200. That is about 7.5 times the value of what they paid.
For lighter use the math changes. Here is what the calculator suggests for common patterns:

Max 5x or Max 20x?
Max 5x fits a developer who uses Claude Code for a few focused hours on most days. Max 20x fits all-day use, long agent runs, several sessions at once, or heavy use of Fable. If you start on 5x and keep hitting limits, you can move up to 20x.
